I was curious to find out how well the various portraits of King Richard matched the reconstruction. Then I attempted to superimpose each of the portraits on the reconstructed face. I found the NPG portrait extremely easy to align, but none of the others even came close. I suddenly had the strangest feeling. It was almost as if King Richard was emerging from the dark into light. The worried face of the portrait was transforming into the confident and slightly smiling face of the reconstruction. It was then that I knew what I should do. Caroline Wilkinson—was not influenced by these portraits but relied only on the skeletal material. It was once the stronghold of the Balliol family, who briefly provided a king of Scotland. Richard inherited it from his father-in-law Warwick the Kingmaker.
Types[ edit ] A basic distinction is between sculpture in the round, free-standing sculpture, such as statues , not attached except possibly at the base to any other surface, and the various types of relief , which are at least partly attached to a background surface. Relief is often classified by the degree of projection from the wall into low or bas-relief , high relief , and sometimes an intermediate mid-relief. Sunk-relief is a technique restricted to ancient Egypt.
Sculpture is the branch of the visual arts that operates in three is one of the plastic e sculptural processes originally used carving (the removal of material) and modelling (the addition of material, as clay), in stone, metal, ceramics, wood and other materials but, since Modernism, there has been an almost complete freedom of materials and process.
The sculptor Pajou was in charge of the works from to There were also commissioned busts of artists, displayed alongside the painting collections, and above all copies of works from antiquity, including numerous bronze busts. Nearly one hundred sculptures were displayed in the five rooms, with varying styles and periods elegantly juxtaposed. Thereafter, only a few sculptures were purchased using the civil list.
Under Louis-Philippe, the government focused its attention on the new historical museum in Versailles. Three of the rooms in the gallery were refurbished in a more historically appropriate style. A new acquisitions policy was implemented. A hall devoted to medieval sculpture was opened. The first new acquisition—the Blanchelande Virgin, purchased in —was given pride of place, facing the statue of Childebert.

Exploration and archaeology[ edit ] Plan of the sanctuary The periegetic writer Pausanias briefly mentions the site in his writings of the 2nd century AD, but does not describe the sanctuary in detail as he does for many others. In , the young English architect Charles Robert Cockerell , finishing his education on his academic Grand Tour , and Baron Otto Magnus von Stackelberg removed the fallen fragmentary pediment sculptures. Minor excavations of the east peribolos wall were carried out in during reconstruction of the last temple.
The area of the sanctuary was defined and studied during these excavations. The area under the last temple could not be excavated, however, because that would have harmed the temple. In addition, significant remains from the Bronze Age were detected in pockets in the rocky surface of the hill. From to , an extensive second German excavation under Dieter Ohly was performed, leading to the discovery in of substantial remains of the older Archaic temple in the fill of the later terrace walls.
Ernst-Ludwig Schwandner and Martha Ohly were also associated with this dig, which continued after the death of Dieter Ohly until Sufficient remains were recovered to allow a complete architectural reconstruction of the structure to be extrapolated; the remains of the entablature and pediment of one end of the older temple have been reconstructed in the on-site museum.

This dragon drawn on a rock weighing a staggering tons is believed to be exceptionally old, a megalith designed by a mysterious ancient population about whom we know nothing. The unique megaliths were located at Mokhnataya mountain in Altai region, some 20 kilometres from the resort town of Belokurikha. Archeological researchers who found the granite monuments believe they date back deep into ancient history, and were put into position by prehistoric people, yet how they did so, and why, currently defies understanding.
The heavyweight dragon seems to be the oldest known image of this mythical creature in Russia. It does not appear to be related to the Chinese style of portraying the mythical creature, but a unique Siberian depiction. The Hermitage museum in St Petersburg has been informed of the discovery. Yet the Scythians did not create such monumental sculptures, and these megaliths appear substantially older, on a par with the oldest examples known to man, Ruslan said.
Its neck can be clearly seen, and the rest is, perhaps, hidden underground. Ruslan Posyolkov ‘In my opinion, this is a unique discovery,’ Ruslan Peresyolkov said. Ruslan Posyolkov The researcher said: However, he made clear detailed research was required to give a more precise dating to the finds. Perhaps, the Scythians inherited a more ancient system of symbols.

The cameo gem known as the ” Great Cameo of France “, c. Petersburg Detail of a sarcophagus depicting the Christian belief in the multiplication of bread loaves and fish by Jesus Christ, c. Roman portraiture Portraiture is a dominant genre of Roman sculpture, growing perhaps from the traditional Roman emphasis on family and ancestors; the entrance hall atrium of a Roman elite house displayed ancestral portrait busts. BRONZE AGE, in Iranian archeology a term used informally for the period from the rise of trading towns in Iran, ca. B.C., to the beginning of the Iron Age, ca. was originally adopted as part of a chronological system based on assumptions about successive changes in the use of raw materials for tool manufacture, but, along with Iron Age and other comparable terms, it.
This reconstruction and other bronze and leather armours, corselets, helmets, shields, greaves, swords, axes, etc.. Mask of this sort were also produced in pottery and they were possibly used as insets for large statues made of wood. This example has two holes at the top on either side and it is possible that these held two horns, the resulting face representing that of a Sherden warrior.
The general features of this mask remind the aspect of the warriors represented in the bronze statuettes from Sardinia. Having reviewed the history of Sherden in the Near East, a question remains to be answered: The Egyptian sources only inform us that they came overseas. Four main propositions have been put forward as to the origin of the Sherden: The first one argued that, on the analogy of the fact that the original homeland of the Tyrsenians is traced back to Lydia by ancient authors, the Sherden are more likely to originate from western Anatolia as well, where the name of the capital of the Lydians, Sardis, and related toponyms like mount Sardena and the Sardanion plain and an ethnonym like Sardonians would be reminiscent of their presence.
Accordingly, the Sherden were considered to be on their way from their original home in Lydia to their later home in Sardinia at the time of the upheavals of the Sea Peoples. In the case of the Sherden, however, the literary evidence from ancient authors to back up their eastern origin is absent: Evidence favour the second hypothesis is the dirk sword such as the Sherden used which is illustrated in cylinder seals of the East centuries before the first encounter of the Sherden with Egypt, and was among the weapons of the Hittite.
What is known of the Aegean or Illirian does not suggest that they favored that sword. The dirk sword indicateds the East, the Semitic and Hurrian regions, as possible places of origin of the Sherden. Sherden personal name may support that origin.
